WANGANUI RIVER SERVICE
PROPOSALS FOR IMPROVEMENT
(United Press Association.}
WANGANUI, May 27. ; A special meeting of the Wanganu; Chamber of Commerce was held to-night to discuss the Wanganui River service. The attendance was not large. The chairman ruled that no personal grievances should be ventilated. The chairman moved, and it was carried : "That 'm order t 0 facilitate the working of the river steamer service without undue friction, a complete schedule of charges for both passengers and cargo to various points of the river between Wanganu: and Taumarunui be published and made available to all requiring to use the river service." It was complained that there were only two charges between Wanganui and Tr.umarunui.
Mr. W. J- Poison moved, "That the Chamber is of opinion that the time hatarrived for the Government to inaugurat an up-river service for the Wanganui River, and that a n expert be sent Home to arrange for the purchase of a fleet of steamers." Mr. A. Hatrick stated that for years past he wanted the Government to take over the control. He regarded the latter part of the motion as to amount to a proposal to confiscate the present line of steamers.
After an animated discussion the motion was carried, the last sentence being deleted The resolutions will be forwarded to the River Service Commission.
