FIRES

TWO OUTBREAKS SUBDUED. An incipient fire in a wash-house at the residence of Mrs Neave, situated in a right-of-way off Waimea Road was responsible for "the bells ringing this morning. The Fire Brigade was soon on the scene. The outbreak was extinguished before much damage was done. An incipient fire occurred this afternoon at Mr E. Smallbone's store, at the PoTt. A small quantity of tar was being boiled in the sailmalcing department, ■when some of it overflowed and caught alight. The alarm was given, and Mr Johnson, an employee, rushed in from another room and threw a horse cover over the burning tar pot, and thus extinguished the flames. The firbell was sounded, but there was no need for any assistance. But slight damage was done.
