STRANGE STORY FROM WHANGAREI

ALLEGED ASSAULT ON A WOMAN. {United Press Association. ) WHANGAREI, Feb. 13. TJie police were informed last night that a woman named Marvm was .found bound and gagged in her own house. The woman states that at 8 o'clock a. voung man came to the door' with a, note, for her husband, purporting to corao from the Superintendent- of tho Fire Brigade, Her husband being a member of the team which left to-day for Vyanganui to take part in the demonstration, she thought ifc genuine. The note asked her husband to -o and see the Superintendent. Five minutes after her husband left, the woman went to her bedroom, and was there seized by two young men, ! a handkerchief thrust in her mouth, and money demanded. A threat was made that they w<iuld choke the life out Of her. A heavy picture com Was placed round licr throat, and pulled till she was nearly strangled.- She fold ht>V* asasilants that there was money in & chest of drawers. A sum of £ll- in notes and 16s in silver were afterwai'ds found to be missing. Three months previously the same woman states that she had a'ii encounter with tho same mep, when JB3 and some jewellery was stolen. When her Husband came home' Half an hour later he found his wife •unco'nscious on the floor. The police reticent, leading the uublic to assume that they are treating the matter as a hoax.
