BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.
BROOK WABD. Am enthusiastic meeting of the Brook Ward Committee of the Nelson Beautifying Society was - held in the Central School last evening, Mr G. Gibbs, the chairman, presiding. In a general review of the year's operations Mr Gibbs referred amongst { . other things, to the flowers iit Alton* street, which were planted by Mtf T. Renwiek and neighbours, formerly he was -against planting flewfeTs, but #the result of this work had altered his opi-! nion so far as certain-.spots were con-' cerned. A threat deal of work had been done at Brook Park, which had been converted from a very rough place to a - promising spot.- It was satisfactory to observe r that the central committee had J ' adopted the suggestion thrown out by the Brook Ward, that the services of, " Mr Glen/,bead gardener at Wellington, be obtained to make suggestions regarding J 'th& beautifying of the city, and" al?o to draw up a comprehensive scheme. Sir. Gibb's then referred-to the proposed work ©Ti*-the Grampian Hills. The owner of laiid .in the vicinity was evidently not ■ wHliiig *to sell a portion of land- that had *oeen referred to, but the City Council had. granted'- permission for the Society to make tracks ■ up the road which continued on to the top of the hills. Mr Moorhouse had commenced clearing this road, and when this was ready, a zigzag track could be easily made to the top, from whijh a magnificent view could be obtained. Mrs Gibbs and the speaker were prepared to give a seat each for the place. (Applause.) A few trees - planted around would make the spot-one -of - the most pleasant in Neflson. The Willow Walk-from Bronte-street to Alton-street crossing had engaged the attention' of residents, and Mr Glen would doubtless -be in a position - to '" advise them regarding the, work for the . year. "He was "strongly oj opinion that it would be advisable for the ward to concentrate;" its energies upon one or two matters instead of spreading out in vari-. oos Brook Park would- doubtless be r the centre of their activities, and also work in the upper part of Broote- - street would probably be that which thev would bo most likely to carry out this year. The Reservoir Reserve could be dealt with sooner or jater. If as the result o£* the poll the extra land were aczie zag track up the- s-ide of the hill would be q good-work. '/- Mr' Gibbs here explained that the c?ol-lecting-jofrsulfecEiptions was entrusted to each ward, but the central, body-had the poweribf' cali"ng dii the ward for money up to 10 per" dent if the money were reauiredbr'-. Be thought it better todefer • collecting subscriptions until after Mr Glen's-visits when they--would-doubtless • * have -a: very,, attractive - scheme to ■ put before.'.the people; •: : The'following* were elected for the .ensuing- Tear■■ v..- ■■■-•.■ " .
