TRAM ACCIDENT AT WELLINGTON
UNION COMPANYS OFFICER KILLED. WELLINGTON, Monday. Mr Duncan McMerrich, marine superintendent in Wellington for the Union Steamship Company, was killed' by a tramear to-night. He and; his wife were crossing the street near the corner of Jervois Quay and Ballance-street, not noticing- that a car was coming near them. The motorman, seeing them, rang his alarm bell. Mr McMerrich and his wife hesitated, and then he went forward and attempted to pull his. wife with him, apparently thinking there was time to cross before the car reached the spot. Mr McMerrich. however, was knocked down, and when taken off the life guard it was found that his skull was fractured, death, having been practically instantaneous. Deceased, who was 57 years of age, had been many years in the service of the Union Company. He came from Scotland in the old Rotorua, and afterwaa-Js was employed in; several of the company's steamers, lastly as chief engineer of the Mararoa. Some 14 years ago ho was mad© Wellington superintendent. He leaves a widow, five sons, and one daughter.
