With a view to securing Mrs. Ortie McManigal's evidence' on behalf of the prosecution in the Los Angeles "Times" dynamiting case the detective confronted her with her husband. The woman swooned, and emerged from that state in a.n hysterical condition. The detectives say that they hoped tha.t the husband would induce his wife to abandon the defence.

The defending attorney created a V ' M ~ lent scene subsequently, asserting that the detectives were hounding the woman for her own purposes. The woman refused to testify.
