MAY-JUNE MAGAZINES.

The MayJunp magazines have been received as usual from Messrs Jackson and Co., J. E. liounsell, and Alt'. Robinson, but pressure of Coronation news has excluded reference to them in these columns. Messrs Jackson and Co. forward the ever welcome fortnightly fiction depositary. "The Red Magazine,*-' from April 15th. As usual, the stories are all most readable and varied in interest. 'The Exploits of Danby Croaker" (by R_ Austin Freemart and otherAlaska stories of "The Cmpetents, "' by Roy Norton, will be found both exciting- and entertaining. The usual staff of complete story -writers contribute bright and interesting tales, and altogether "The Red" should " catch on." Mr -7. E. liounsell forwards the June ''Windsor" w 7 ith much varied mater and many illustrations. A complete loner story by Justus Miles Forma n revives the interest in a famous pearl known as . "The Harvest Moon," Eden Philpotts contributes another episode in his Dartmoor series "'Prom 'The Plume of Feiathers.' " and the career of "Lord Stranleigh. Philanthropist," is carried a stage further by Robert Barr. Keble Howard eon tributes a comedy-story, • and Archibald Marshall, Fred M/Wbite, and other popular authors are also represented. Prominent among the articles is an account of the Shakespeare Festival at Stratford-upon-Avon, and an estimate of "Eight as a Preservative of Health" is contributed by Sir James Criehton-Brown. The fine art feature of the number is an article on the "work of Henry Moore. R.A.. a seascape painter of eminence, and the series "England's Story i n Portrait and Picture" i s continned with from the Reign of Ed-wa-d TV.

"Peiarson's Magazine" for May. <e7U by Mr Alf. Robinson lias article? of especial interest to amateur gardeners, and also to amateurs who would like to make their gardens pay, especially with regard to flower breeding and winter and intensive culture by means of cloches, or the "French method of bell glasses. Captain 'Cuttle, Mr Cufeliffe TTyne's creation, reappears, this time in Mexico; and Beatrice Grimshaw's "When the Bed Cods Call," is continued. An article on mountain climb-in a 1 i ll Croat Britain bv G. D. Abraham, is of interest, while fiction is- contributed by numerous well-known writers. The "Strand" for June, also sent by Mr "Robinson, is opulent .in its advertisements, which make the number quite a volume; but there is also tiie usual varied reading matter of interest. ''The Joyous Adventures of Aristide Pujol." by W. J. Locke; "Prom Beli-ind the Speaker's Chair," Sir Henry Lucy-, and E. L. Nesbit's tale for children. "The Wonderful Garden," are continued, while the articles are on '"Women's Bights—and Men's," by the Hon. Mr s Fitzroy Stewart and Miss Christ-abel Pankhurst; "Portrait's of Celebrities." by Geo. Cadbury; "The Stage as a Profession"; ''The Cuckoo." by Alfred Taylor; and "What to do in a Railway Accident," by Leonard Danby. There are also several complete stories and many illustrations. 'Nash's" for' May., from Mr Alf. Robinson, has special articles by Thos. Burke, E. O. Hoppe, and L. G. Chiozza Money, M.P. The fiction section is of varied interest, and contains the first of a new detective series by Arthur Reeve, "Craig Kennedy, Scientific Detective." R. W. Chambers continues his serial, "The Common Law," and there are tales and sketches by Laurence Kirk. James Stephens, Edward Cecil, Marion Gilmore. Mary Germaine, and Percy Brebner. A speculative article of interest is "If London Were Flood-. ed."'by Allen Walker, F.S.A.. and the "'Gallery of Players" furnishes some admirable portraits of modem theatre celebrities.
