ROD AND LINE.
EELING IN THE MAITAI. Last evening the Nelson Anglers Club held its second eeling competition for trophies presented by Messrs NOonan (1), Batchelor and A. Shoiite (2) and Doyle (3). There were six competitors, and the large number of 166 eels were taken between 7 and 9 o'clock, some beinc of good size. Claude Snow was again the winner with 87 fish, and he would had over 100 if there had not been a mishap with a few dozen that got back into the stream at- Collingwood-street bridge. Mr. Young was second with 4b, and Air. Haase third with 15. There was a large gathering at the club room when the count was made, "Bishop Skinner officiating as official counter, and Mr. JV. E. Mansford as judge, and a very enjoyable social evening was spent in songis, recitations and cards, mterspersec' bv refreshment served up by tne special "chefs" of the club. During the evening it was resolved to hold an eeling competition for boys who had been "pickers up" for the adult eelers, and for boy friends and relatives of members each member nominating one competitor. It is intended to present some good prizes and also to give the youngsters a "tuck out" after the c< ? un in. The date of Mr. Snow s lectuie to voung anglers on points in fishing, tack?,e .etc*., wa,s arranged, ,ami the catheriny dispersed with Auld Lant, Syne" at midnight. . As to-morrow is not an 9 holiday and all probable competitors cannot get awav, the usual fly-fishing competition for the President's trophy held on 9th November has been deferred, and fresh arrangements will be made.
