COUNTRY SCHOOL TEACHERS.
CONFERENCE AT AUCKLAND. BANISHMENT FROM TOW,NS. (United Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, Thursday. At the quarterly conference o: country school teachers held to-day a letter was read from the Education Board to the effect that it could not see its way to grant the request tnc country service should carry ex'ru marks.
Mr Ellis spoke strongly on this matter, and urged the Executive to kef.-ji steadily in view the.question of on'':: - - ing educational inducement to teachers to go into the country. He s.*p'l that at its last meeting the Board wa? bewailing the fact that it could nor get young men to go into country districts; but this was not surprising in existing, circumstances.
Mr Lamb thought that a minimum of at least three years' country service should be required of teachers. and if this were so-it would give those who had to put up with social banishment for long a chance to get into the towns. Thi s wa s a matter that affected all the Boards in theJ>ominion. Several of the members said at present that if a man once got into the country he was geneiflly there for good. It was decided to refer the question to the Executive, a report to be made at next meeting.
