NELSON'S IMPROVED HARBOUR.
the rakaia. arrival expected on monday oltward freights as at wellington. Messrs E. Buxton and Co., Ltd., the agents in Nelson for th? New Zealand Shiping Co., have received advice that the s.s. Rakaia will leave Lyttelton for Nelson on Saturday, reaching this port on Sunday night, or early on Monday morning. The Rakaia will be the pioneer of th? direct steamer connection between Nelson and London. She will take- on Board about 14,000 carcases of sheep and lambs from the Nelson Freezing Works. In addition to the frozen meat which will be put aboard the Rakaia, there will be shipment of other lines. ■ It Bad been hoped that the Rakaia would take a shipment of Nelson apples on her initial visit. Efforts w?re made by Messrs Buxton and Co., and Mr F. Hallam (Orchard Inspector) in this direction, and it is understood that about 1000 cases would have been forthcoming. It is learnt, however, that about 5000 cases would be required to fill a chamber, and as time would not allow of such a quantity of fruit being secured. it will not be possible to take advantage of the Rakaia' s visit. In this issue Messrs Buxton and Co. invite intending snipers by the Rakaia to communicate with them at once. The rates of freight to be charged from Nelson will be the same as those from Wellington. Thus the Nelson to Wellington freight and transhipping charges will bf savrd by shippers, and the importance of the direct steamer communication with Condon abundantly demonstrated.
