NELSON CUSTOMS RETURNS.

THE YEAR'S RESULTS. Through tiie courtesy of Mr Cullen, Collector of Customs, we are enabled to give the totals of Nelson Customs returns | for the yoar ended March 31st, 1909. They show an apparent decrease of £2231 compared with 1907-8 ; but it should be remembered that remissions in Customs taxation, such as the sugar duty, and the operation of the preferentia ltariff have contributed towards this decrease rather than a falling-oS in I trade. A reference to the increases m | the Port shipping returns for the same ] corresponding period will b?ar out this view : — NELSON CUSTOMS DUTIES FOX YEAR ENDING MARCH 31, 1909. EXCISE DUTY.— BEER (3d ped gal.). Appended are tho returns of beer duty for the periods from Ist April to 31st March in the years 1907-8 and 1908-9 respectively : —
