CORRESPONDENCE.
A COOK MEMORIAL. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — The people of Marlborough are muck interested in erecting a suitable monument to the memory of Captain Cook at Ship Cove, the placo where the great navigator took shelter from the stormy and tempests which abound in the Strait which we have named after him, and where he careened his ship, the Endeavour, and sojourned for some time. Often, when voyaging past tho historic spot, it has struck me that there, if anywhere, should a monument be e>ct up to the memory of tho men who rediscovered theso islands, and gave them as a blessed inheritance to us; and now that the Marlborough folk have so well begun to materialise the idea, it is imrely fitting that the rest of the Dominion should lend aid to complete the work. The present intention is to establish a national memorial to Captain Cook au<l his gallant crew at Ship Cove. Already the people of Blenheim have secured from various sources some £300, and the intention is to call for competitive designs for a suitable monument, and as they wish the memorial to be a national one, they are anxious that the people of the entire Dominion should have an opportunity to contribute. I would suggest that a public meeting be held in the City Council Chamber at a near date, that the Mayor and City Council and other local bodies co-operate, and that an endeavour bo made on the part of the city to do justice to the opportunity which presents itself of honouring tho memory of the great sea-captaiu and the dauntless men who piloted the way to our country, and who. have so far received no honour at our hands. Enclosed is an account of the meeting held in Blenheim on the 3rd inst.. and the copy of a short article published in a Blenheim newspaper. Asking you to interest yourself in the matter, I am, etc., A. A. GRACE.
