[United Peess Association.] ASHBURTON, Monday. At tho inquest oc the body of the man found m tho Ashburton river on Sunday, Mr V. G. Cay, S.M., the Coroner, who pat without a jury, returned an open verdict, namely, that deceased, whose identity is unknown, was found dead. The evidence showed deceased was fully 70 years of age. HOKITIKA, Morfday. Tames Lincoln, working at 7\lessrs Lincoln Bros. sawmUl at Flowery Creek, met with a very serious accident to-day. Ho had fastened the iron dogs on to a. log preparatory to hauling by a steam winch. He thon gave the signal to start hpuling, and when tho strain came one of the iron dogs broke loses and the iron struck Lincoln over tho right eye, causing a severe compound fracture of the frontal bone. The sufferer was brought to the Hokitika Hospital, but there are only slight hopes of his recovery. INVERCARGILL, Monday. On Saturday at Magara, a man named Clarenco Matthews, aged 22 years, »-a* arrested for alleged theft of efothinz, and discharging a revolver at a man named Wilson. Whilst in the cells thiring the night Matthews made a deliberate but unsuccessful attempt to hani; himself, the constable in charge ju.'t being in time to save him. Today Matthews was declared to be in- ■•«/!« and ho was sent to Seaeliff WANGANUI, Monday. , At the inquest on Louie Pippin, a verdict was returned that deceased's was caused by a fracture of the -k.:ll.
