In connction with the coroner's remarks on Saturday condemning the lifebelts available on Napier beach, it is pointed out that the life-belts used are in accordance with the Board of Trade Regulations, and that a line 200 yards long as suggested would be unmanageable in the surf. At the inquest at Hastings touching tho death of Martin Periva (or Pellor), a native of Ceylon, aged about 45 years, who had just arrived at Karamea Station to work as cook, Mr S. E. McCarthy, the Coroner, returned a verdict that the deceased met his death owing to being badly burned whilst in a state of intoxication ; that every reasonable attempt was made to rescue "him from the burning building ; and that he was properly cared for afterwards.
