EHGIHEER'S REPORT.
The City Engineer (Mr W. Aitcheson Smith) reported as follows : — I Sewerage. — Since the li.st meeting of jour Council operations in this conLection have completely ccase'l imhiu to tho moneys available being expended. At the last meeting of your Drainago Committee it was resolved tc proceed with th: works, obtaining tlie money on a certain interest basis. I would respectfully urge your Council tc give the latter part of their resolution their consideration in orii^r that it, may be male slightly mo-e elastic, in order that there may be a more reasonable prospect of obtaining the necessary moneys at an early date permitting of the whole works being compietod before the heavy winter rain sets in, thus enabling me to complete the works in a manner cor. sistent with despatch and economy. Work?.— During the past f rmtght considerable repairs have been effected to the we.stern end of the Bocks Keaa breaMworkV. lhe niStHllFng and repairs to the Haven-road ara well in hand, and are being pushed m with as .ii*n and drays are available. Several works of a minor nature have been carried out, men and drays being kept fully employed. W atcr.-^S'ince the last- me»ling of your Council the upper or high-level weir has been completed, and the pressure turned on to the town. The hydraulic pressure has increased to 132 lbs. a square inch, and tHe hydrostatic pressure has increased from 150 lbs. a square inch to 2021b5. a square inch., which has resulted in a great number of burst mains in various parts of the town. Owing to the defective state of the city mains there have been a large number of bursts, and in addition to these there have also been several fire plugs blown out and services rendered inoperative through eels getting into the servioa pipes. I The S.-.nitary li.spootor reported that tho City was si ill free from fever or infectious disease of any kind. The Abattoir manager reported that during the fortnight 68 cattle, 15 ■ aives, 476 sheep, 277 lambs, and 41 ous wore slaughtered at the Abattoir On? sheep was condemned. Obdinaiiy Business. The Town Clerk read a resolution in ••■gard to the sinking fund attached o local bodies' loans, and oposing Hie ■•■vnpulsory vesting of all sinking funds :i the Public Trustee. — The resolution was adopted. The Mayor reported that during the fortnight 14 houses had been connected, making a total of 160 connections. The Mayor hoped ' Councillors would have their houses connected, and so set a good example. The City Engineer reported that two 'oaks_in the ,Yvood ..drainage, pipes had ji;eii discovered... The leaks were causal by broken pipes. Cr .Robertson remarked that the apnroaeh to the Cemetery gate needed -.ttPiition. Cr. Turner drew attention to the fact that ush heads and offal were >mplied at the tip and caused a bad 'mell. He moved that fish, etc., be iepositcd only at low water. — Carried. Cr. Pettit stated that several parti? of the city required the attention of the Sanitary Inspector. The Council then went into Committee.
