[Pbkss Association.— Oopxbiqhtj MELBOURNE, Friday. Sir Thomas Bent, State Premier, intends to ask the Cabinet to invite a squadron of British battleships to visit Australia. Lord Dudley, the new GovernorGeneral, was accorded an enthusiastic welcome. DUNEDIN, Friday. Wiiliain D wight, who was committed for sentence for forgery and uttering, this morning was admitted to probation for 12 months by Mr Justice Williams. FEILDING, Friday. After a spell of fine weather rain commenced on Wednesday, and continues. Heavv rain fell last night, and hail this morning. It is splendid growing weather, and lambs are doing well. NAPIER, Friday. An opinion from the Solicitor-General on the ruling of the Commissioner of Crown Lands at the last meeting of the Land Board which led to the removal of Mr Lane, came before the meeting of the Board to-day. The opinion upheld the Commissioner's ruling, but declared the incident closed. Mr Lane 6trongly protested at what he termed Ministerial interference, and withdrew from the meeting to emphasise his protest. ■\. very old colonist, Mrs Elizabeth Hallett, has died at Taradale, aged 97. Tho deceased arrived in 1842, and with her husband passed through the trying times of the pioneers. PALMERSTON N„ Friday. The Manawatu Racing Club has fixed on December 23rd," as the first day for the three days' summer meeting, arid have increased the stakes by £800, making the total .£5560, which includes the largest classical race in the Dominion— the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes, of £1000 sovereigns — to be run on Mondav, December 28th. At the inquest on the body of William Lickis, who died suddenly yesterday, a verdict of death due to natural causes was returned. WELLINGTON, Thursday. Mr A. E. L. Bertling, who brought out the herd of chamois presented to tho Dominion by the Emperor of Austria, has been appointed as Superintendent of the Zoo at Newtown at a salary of £200 per annum. Mr Bertling was formerly head keopcr of the Zoological Gardens in 'Regent Park, London. WELLINGTON, Friday. At the Supreme Court to : day John William Bishop, alias Brown, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for theft from a dwelling.
