THE WEATHER.

FLOOD AT INVERCARGILL. GALE AT WELLINGTON. (.'nitcd Pbess Association.] INVERCARGILL, Thursday. Heavv rain fell in Invercargill this morning, and its conjunction with a high spring tide and a westerly wind caused a banking up of the estuary, and a good deal of flooding of the low-lying lands, and one house at least was surrounded by water, but there was no danger to life. The boats were washed out of the Avenal Rowing Club's sheds. The new show grounds were flooded, and the new tramway bridge to Otatara was awash. So far no serious damage has been reported, and with the going down of the tide, and slackening of the rain and wind, the flood water has now (9,15 p.m.) receded. WELLINGTON, Thursday. A fierce northerly gale prevailed ia Wellington throughout most of to-day, accompanied by rain storms in the morning. No particular damage is reDorted. except a slight subsidence of the small wharf at Rona Bay. The trainine ship Amokura parted from her anchors, and drifted between the coal hulks in the harbour, and had to obtain the services of a tug to tow her back to an anchorage. s — rzr
