THE PROPOSED WEBB TESTIMONIAL. AN EXPLANATION FROM WANGANUI. NO STATE SUBSIDY ASKED. [United Press Assocutios.l WANGANUI, Saturday. A meeting of the executive committee of the Webb reception this morning drew attention to the fact that a few newspapers were taking a hostile attitude towards the national presentation movement. It was pointed out that opposition was based on a misconception of the spirit in which tJip appeal is being made. The intention aws merely to afford an opportunity to those resident in other parts of the colony to subscribe towards a, reasonable recognition of Webb's achievement, which is "almost universally regarded by the press at a national event. There is no intention to appeal to the Government.
