H.M.S. PROMETHEUS.
i GUN PRACTICE IN THE BAY. H.M.S. Prometheus arrived at the • outer anchorage late yesterday afternoon from Lyttelton. A boat from the I warship came ashore this morning for i supplies and the mail, and on her re- ■ turn the Prometheus steamed across the bay for gun practice. She returns this afternoon. There has been no commui ideation with the vessel from the shore, so that her future movements are not known. She arrived at Lyttelton on April 14th from Sydney with H.M.S. ' Powerful, and left for NeUon on Wed- ; nesday last. The Prometheus isa third-class twini screw cruiser of 2135 tons displacement, and was built at Hull at a cost of £135,916. She was launc hed in 1898, but not completed unt:i 1901. Her engines are of 7000 horse-power, and she can steam 20 knots an hour. She is 300 ft long, 36ft 6in beam, and her draught is 13ft 6in. Her armament consists of eight 4-inch guns, eight 3pounders, and two machine guns, and she is also fitted with two torpedo tubes. She is a similar vessel to the Pyramus, which visited Nelson a few months ago. She carries a crew of 224. This is her second commission on the Australian station, having been recently re-commissioned for further service. The following is a list of her officers : — Commander Rudolf W.
