The motheris a Dunedin girl who came up to Christchurch, where the child was born. The accused appeared before the Magistrate this morning, and was remanded till the 30; h. Later. Alfred James Hellyer, who was charged with chiH murder at the Magistrate's Court this morning, and who was taken seriously ill in the police cells dnring the afternoon, and was removed to the hospital, died shortly before eight o'clock to-night, presumably from poisoning. It appears that Hellyer, when searched the previous da)', waa found to be in possession of a phial containing white tabloids or crystals, which, with his oiher belongings, were taken from him in the usual way. Early yesterday morning be asked Constable Wigh, the watchhouse-keeper, to give him tne. phial, explaining that he wanted to use' too contents fur the purpose of deadening toothache pains, from which he was then suff ering. The constable complied with the request, and gave the man tho contents, retaining possession of the phial. However, it is now presumed that tbe phial contained a form of cyanide of pota^sium, but an analysis of the stomach is being made, with the object of ascertaining definitely what caused his death. Hellyer was a young man of about twenty-five, and he had been employed at a local warehouse. He came to Cbristchurch from Dunedin, where his people live. The police are still seai chine for the body of the child alleged to have been murdered by Hellyer, but 90 far wiphout success.
