Twenty-four awards had been made during the year, consisting of four silrer and two bronze medals, four certificates in vellum, and fifteen letters of commendation. In several inßiances very high qua if yof heroism had been shown. The Directors bad continued the issue of lifesaving charts, and had also distributed five hundred copies of the first annual report, [which contained valuable information in reference to saving ];fe. They were of opinion th t the time had srri ved for formulating a scheme for making 1 awards for proficiency in theoretic <\ knowledge of the art of life-saving from drowning to pupils of all public and private schools in tho colony on the line 3 adopted by tt.o Royal Humane Societies of England and Australasia. The statement of accounts showed a small credit balance. Sir John Hall was elected President, and the Mayors of Ch'istchurch, Duoedin, Wellington, Anckland Napier, Inro'cargiH, New Plymouth, Hokitika, Westport, Timaru, and Oamaru were elected Vice Presidents.
