A curious oiioumstauce has occurred in connection with the municipal nomination for the Punedin South Ward. Mr H. 8. *«h was nominated some days ago, and on Wednesday evening the nomination , paper of Mr 0. R; Chapman was dropped , into the letter box of the Mission Hall, the [ place appointed, bat when the Returning Officer examined the box, that nomination paper was, not in the box. Ihere was a nomination paper of Mr Bhacklock. It is presumed that some lamkuiß iished the paper out of the letterbox. There has been a boom in telephone extension in and around Sydney, consequent upon the reductiun of rates. From May to November, 1181 connections were put in, and over 2000 miles of wire have been erected. In addition to this, two lines have been erected on a metallic circuit between Newcastle and Maitland for Messrs D. Cohen and Co. and the East Greta Coal Co. So great is the extension of telephones all over the world, that manufaotuiers cannot keep pace with' ' tha demand for instruments. The '''North Otago Times'" states tha y . :•' a fish, 161binweigl|t, caught by Mr John' ' Mitchell in the .Waitaki, is supposed to.-. \ >> a trfle salmon, and ib to be submitted V: to expert opinion."
