CHURCH HILL DOVEDALE.
The householders met in the Church Hill School at Dovedale at the time appointed for the election of the local School Committee. Mr J Lammas was voted to the chair. The balance sheet having been read was adopted after some discussion. Ten householders were then nominated, necessitating a ballot with the following results : — Messrs E Davis, A liavis, A Jordan, I Inwootl, W Hocton, O Davies, and T Snook. At a meeting of the new Committee Mr A Jordan, was elected Chairman, and Mr T Snook Secretary. .
At the termination of the trial of a woman named Ida Liberman and several members of a gang of incendiaries at the Sessions Court at Now York there was au incident of quite a sensational character. As soon as the verdict of " Guilty was announced, Ida Liberman seized her six-year-old son, who was sitting by her side, and shouting " He must not know that his mother is in prison, gripped him by the neck, and squeezing it with both hands until the boy was black in the face and almost unconscious A number of men rushed to the boy s aid ; but the woman still trying to suifucate him, kicked and hit nt them most savagely. Finally the two were separated, and the lad was taken away. The woman's mother, who was sitting in the eaurt, screamed and fainted, and her brother ran along the corridor, and was just springing over the baulstrade, when tin ollicer who had followed him, seized him by the leg only just in time to save him trom falling to the pavement OOfi below. Ha was a mathematical fellow, and always engaged in making intricate calculations on p.ipcr. The marriage, was to t iko place on Friday ; but he suggested to his prospective mother-in-law that it had better lake place on Thursday. "Why do you wish it changed?" she asked suspiciously. "Well," said he, ' I have been making a calculation, and I lind that my silver wedding will come on a Saturday evening; and that would never do, as that is the evening I have to go to the ledge." Some time ago a boatswain was sent out from England to join a gunboat in the I'ar East. Lo and behold, on his arrival it was discovered that his exceptional physical dimensions prevented him from going down the hatchway ! Try as he might, he could not possibly squeeze his body through the narrow opening. What did tho naval authorities do ? They widened the hatchway, no doubt. Not a bit of it ; they sent back the corpulent boatswain to England, and despatched a slimmer man in his stead. Mrs Strongmind— 'lt women would only stand shou der to shou der, they would soon wiu the sulferage.' Dr < iufly— 'Bur, mndam, that is soineihing they <a I't do, with the present style in sleeves.' Famous Violinist (after his great solo - " IJo you play any instrument, l'Viiulciu ':' Miss Ethel— 1 ' K'o ;my mother always said her children should not be a nuisance to any one if she could help it."
