FATAL ACCIDENT.
I A fatal aocidout happened yesterday evening, in the tunnel on the Midland Railway Company's works at Belgrova, to Patrick Nelson, who was employod on the contract. The sides and roof of tha tuunel are temporarily supported by heavy perpendicular and horizontal timbers plaoed olosely together, and tho horizontal ones como very near the truoks which bring out the earth exoavated. Any one riding on a truck has therefore to keep his head and body flat down to avoid being struck. Nsleou waa coming out of the tunnel on a iruok, and apparently thought that ho waa past all the supports aa he lifted his heid, Ho was immediately struok and waa dnagged between tho timber and tho edge of the Iruok, A message was at onoe sent down to Belgrove and as Dr. Pearleiis happened to be paeßing in tho ooaoh he got off and went to the scene of the accident, Though Nelson was still oonsoious there was no hope of reoovery aud ho died shortly afterwards, On the newß ol the aooident reaching Belgrove a te'egrarc was sent to tho Very Reverend Fathei Mahoney in Nelson, and bo drove up at I speedily as possible, but arrived too late tc find tho unfortunate man alive. Nelson , was a young man, being only twenty-twc years of ago, and was married only about six weeks ago. He was a native of the South of Ireland. Ho was an excellent workman, and waa much liked both by hit employers and hie follow-workmen. He was formerly employed on tho Calliope Dock in Auckland, Tho greatest sympathy is felt with his young widow, and there is general mourning in tho works aud in the neighborhood generally, The body was brought to Belgrovo to-day in order that an inquest might bo held this aftomoon. The funeral will leave tlu Belgrovo Hotel at noon to-morrow for St Joseph's Church, Wakefield.
