FURTHER PARTICULARS
Last night a fire swept ten (?) acres of ground destroying about thirty buildings. The insurances as far as can be* ascertained are :— South British, £3400 net loss ; Transatlantic, £3000; Union, £2000; Victorian £1560; Royal, £900; North British and Mercantile, £1250; Northern, £550; Imperial, £600; Hanseatic, £600; London and I Lancashire £950 } Colonial £1400; Standard £250; National £1458; San £175, The ' New Zealand Insnrance amount is not obtainable yet, but is supposed to be between ! £3000 and £4000. \ When the strong room of the branch Bank of New Zealand was opened this morn- ! ing, the walls were blackened with smoke, but all the contents were uninjured. ' Amongst the contents were all the papers ! connected with the Rhodes' estate. ! ' The buildings destroyed are :— -Opera 1 House, Eugleman's Fancy Bazaar; Eddie and Jack's bottlery establishment, Working Men's Club, Stratford's corn store, Bank of ' New Zealand, Warcup's bootmaker, Smart's oyster shop, Hogarth's timber yards; Graves and Fleming's drapery, Elder's fruit shop* Rickman's boot shop, Wesleyan Church and school, Simon's tailor, Young's oyster shop, Brown's cabinet maker, Nag's Head Hotel and [stables, Emeny's Hotel, Market Hall, Williams and Cameron's saddlery, Ashtou's boot shop, and a lot of outbuildings. A good deal of damage was done to Te Aro House. Later. The following is the complete and corrected list of insurances:— South British, £3,400; Transatlantic, £3000; Standard. £2500; New Zealand, £2,500; Union, £2500; NortherD, £1500; National, £1450; Colonial, £1400; Victoria, £1500; North British, £1200; Hanssatic, £1100; Royal, £900; London and Lancashire, £900; Imperial, £500, Magdeburg, £500; Guardian, £300, Sun, £175; Manchester, £150; Norwich Union, £150. The Liverpool, London, and Globe and the United bad no risks. A meeting of the Insurance agents will be held this afternoon.
