A discovery of a startling nature was made on board the; steamer Wanaka yesterday afternoon. It appears that among the passengers is a lady and four, children on their way to Westport, and one of the latter having been taken suddenly ill, Dr Farrelle was sent for who at once saw that the disease was scarlet fever, but.' before positively pronouncing it to be such he called in Dr Boor who visited the patient, and ( quite agreed with Dr Farrelle as to the nature of the illnes. Mr Hewson/who is acting ftealth;o_fi.cer in the place, of Mr Cross, who is prevented by illness from attending to his duties^ at once placed himself in communication with the General Government as' to the course to be pursued, and, has suggested -that the steamer proceed on her journey and the invalid be landed at Westport and placed in some isolated house. Meantime the steamer has been thoroughly fumigated, and with theyellbw flag flying, h£s hauled off into the stream. Seeing, however; that her passengers, some fifty or sixty in number, have been on shore for 48 hours, it seems to be a somewhat useless precaution to place her in quarantine. •-■,.. The All England Eleven, accompanied^: a few of bur local Cricketers; had a short; practice in Victory, . Square . this morning. . Our visitors rather astonished the spectators " by showing what could be done with the ball by practised players. Never before has it been seen to travel in Nelson as it did this morning, and we can promise our twentytwo that they will have plenty of work in the field on the match day. The play of the Eleven was almost all forward, and some of the drives they made were really, splendid, and called forth many exclamations of surprise from the lookers 'phi" One feature in the play was specially noticeable; namely, that scarcely a hall was al-. lowed to pass the wicket, all .of, them being either stopped or hit. The bowling displayed great variety, swift and slow, twisters and shooters, and he must be a* wary batsman who can make any long stand against the artillery brought to bear upon his wicket. The Eleven left for Auckland in the Wellington this afternoon. A meeting of the Regatta Committee was held last evening, but little business of importance was transacted. A letter was read from Mr Pitt containing his opinion as to the validity of Mr Richardson's claim for the prize in the yacht race. It was decided to . hold a final meeting on Monday evening, when the whole of the members, who will receive postal cards inviting . them to be present, are requested to attend. , The Pott of Tuesday, says:— -His Honor Mr Justice Richmond we understand, is to.be permanently stationed ait.
