OPENING OF THE GENERAL SYNOD.
A special service, on the occasion ol 'the opening of the General Synod, was held at Christ Church this morning, when a. numerous congregation assembled. Shortly after eleven the Bishops, five in number, with the Dean of Christchurch, Archdeacons, and clergy entered the church at the western door, and walked in procession to the chancel , the choir singing the hymn " Saviour, Blessed Saviour," No. , 335, Hymns Aucient and Modern, The prayers were read by the Rev J. Leighton, the Incumbent of : Christ Church, the first lesson by the Bishop of Dunedin, the second by the Bishop of Auckland, the Communion service by the Primate, and the Epistle by the Bishop of Nelson. After the service, which waia carried out in accordance with the programme as published yesterday, £he Holy Communion was ad- - ministered, At four o'clock this afternoon, the Synod was opened in the Provincial Hall, when there were present:— - Bishops: The Most Rev the Primate, President; the Right .Revs the Bishops of Auckland; Wellington, Nelson, aud Dunedin. Dean: The Ve'sy Rev fhe Dean of Christchurch, | Archdeacons : Tlie Yen Archdeacons | Maunsell, Williams, Stock, and Harper. ' Clergy : The Revs Beaumont, Burrows, 1 Dudley, Kf-ryey, Jackson, Leighton, Lingard, | and Williams. . . * , . Laity: Messrs Ackland, Acton Adams, Baddeley, C. Hunter Brown, Carleton; Doyglas, Fell, Hurst, Lusk, Marten. Oliver, Pierson, Pickering, Quick, and Seymour. The roll having b.een called, the President proceeded to deliver his opening address, which we publish to-day in a supplement. The Synod was sitting when we went to press.
