It appears that the Government have lately erected a lamp over the entrance lo the Telegraph office in Wellington, which a Wellington contemporary admits to be a highly useful addition, but declines to pass any opinion as to its being ornamental, and relates, instead, the following story, leaving its readers to draw their own v conclusions : — A Maori was passing along, when he caught sight of the lamp. He paused, smacked hie lips, felt his pockets, and,- entering the building, turned into a room on the ground floor. He looked around in vain for a seat ; he asked in vaiii for a drink, when, just as he was about to be requested to leave, his eye fell on a npoving machine, which was ticking away apparently of its own accord, and in horrible affright he rushed into the street. Once in the ojien air his courage returned, and, gazing- at^ the lamp, he exclaimed^^ with; ieartfelt anguish " kathore a pub." ;^ ) : ,ry.-.
