LIGHTBAND'S CLAIM.
The; PeoVincial S-ecuetaiiy -moved, That the name of Mr. Reid be "added to the Select Committee appointed to consider Mr. Lightband's claim. Motion- agreed- to. * ESTIMATES. The Council resolved itself into Committee on the Estimates. Mr Edwards in the chair. Uivier the head of Justice, the following items were passed without amendment: I lire of Rooms for Magistral es, £32; Supreme Court Witnesses, £200; Gaoler (also Meteorological Registrar), £275; Turnkey, £iSO; Two Overseers, at £11 per month, £'64; Matron, £50; Contingencies. £575. On the item. Inspector of Police, £260, being read, Mr. Wastney moved as an amendment 'hat the words " also Collector of Education Rat "S and Dog Tax in Nelson," be added. On a division, the amendment was agreed to. The Provincial Secretary then moved that the figures £300 be substituted for £260. Amendment lost: Ayes, 10; Noes, 11. The items, Sergeant Major, £200; Sergeant, £160; Two Constables, at £12 per monih; were agreed to. On the item of "Seven Constab'es at £11 per m>*nth. £9l2,'7*beingput. Mr Wastney moved as an amendment, "Fi^e Ctns'ables at £11 per month. £660." ; Amendment carried. Special Constables, £100; Forage for Horses, £40; •St*tionery, £5; passed without amendment. Arms, Travelling Expenses, Sec,. £100, was, on the motion of Mr. Wastney, amended to " Travelling Expenses. &c, £50. Uniform, £100, was, on the mo ion .of Mr. Wastnky, reduced to £*-0. All the items uuder the head of District Police passed without amendment, with the exception ; of Amuri, £200, which, on tlie motion of Mr. * Gibbs, was reduced to £100. CHARITABLE. . Hospital: Visiting Physician, £100; House Surgeon, £200; A ttendants and Servants, £265 ; and Contingencies, £1262. Lunatic Asylum: Attendant, £120; Matron, £50; Contingencies, £745. Maintenance of Destitute Poor, £1200 These items passed without amendment. HARBOR. Harbor Master and Pilot was, on the. motion of Mr. Gibbs, reduced from £450 to £400; Second Pilot and Coxswain reduced from £300 to £275. The remaining" items passed without, amendment. HACKNEY CARRIAGE ACT. Inspector, £20; passed without amendment. COLLINGWOOD GOLDFIELDS. Warden, £50; Contingencies, £!0. These items were passed. SOUTH-WEST GOLDFIELDS. The whole of the departmental estimates, with but two or three exceptions, were passed without amendment The items, "Five Clerks (half salaries), £582; and Stationery, Printing. Advertising, and Contingencies, were postponed. Two Sergeants, at 13s. 6d. per diem, £492 155., was amended to "at 12s per diem, £465 17s ;" Accoutrements and Travelling Expenses (Police from £450 to £300; and Contingencies, from £220 to £100. Under the head of Land nnd Public Works, Labor, Tents and Sundries, £1000, was reduced to £600, and Overseer of Works from £300 to £250 The Speaker having resumed the chair, the Council adjourned at 9.45 p m.
