WESLEYAN INTELLIGENCE.

The evidence given on behalf of the Methodists before the Royal Commission was generally in favor of united secular aud separate religious education. It also pointed to the necessity of superseding the present National Board and appointing a small number of paid commissioners, to administer a system of national education settled by the authority of parliament. In the colony of Victoria, Australia, 88 per cent, of the Weslsyans can read and 57 per cent, write ; of the Preysbyterians 82 per cent, can read and 50 per cent, write ; of the Church of England 77 per cent, can read and 47 per cent, write. In South Australia, out of 91, 810 sittings the Wesleyan Methodists provide 22,000j and out of 398 Sunday Schools, containing 25,914 children, they have 130 schools, containing 9000. An important movement is on foot among the Canadian Methodists for raising, by voluntary subscriptions, a fund of 100,000 dollars as part of an endowment for Victoria College, with special provision for the traiuing of candidates for the Christian Ministry. The Rev. W. M. Puushon, M.A., President of the Canadian Conference, has been requested to devote as much of his time to this work as his other duties will allow.
