This Day. . Before J. Sharp, Esq., R.M. Nairn v. R. M'Hae. Defendant was charged with introducing into the province of Nelson 100 sheep contrary to the provisions of the 13th Section of the 'Nelson Scab Act, 1868.' .m Mr Kingdon appeared for defendant,and stated that the sheep had beeu brought over the Maungatapu, aud there being no tank at the boundary they could not be dipped. Mr Newton said that he had examined the sheep and found them apparently clean. The Magistrate stated that under the circumstances he should inflict the lowest fine in his power, namely 5s and costs. Nairn v. Jellyman. This was a similar offence to tbe last, and the same fine was inflicted. Nairn v. Water house. [ An information was laid against defendant for slaughtering four sheep infected with the scab, contrary to the provisions of the 'Nelson Scab Act, 1868.' His Worship said that this was the first offence of the kind that had been tried, and he should therefore inflict the lowest penalty of 20s and costs, Barnes v. Helps. Claim for £4 8s 6d for seven nights and half-a-day being in possession of goods uuder a distress warrant. 'Henry Barnes sworn : I was engaged by defendant for seven nights to watch some timber on the wharf. I made no agreement with him about payment. I was there from 8 in the morning to 8 at night. I asked for a shilling an hour, but no arrangement was made to that effect. Alfred Helps sworn . Plaintiff offered to take charge of some timber for me at la. an hour. I refused, but said I would

pay him 8s a night. He went away but came back and said he supposed he must take it. Judgement for plaintiff, for £3 Os 66. and costs. Thomas Askew r. Wm Pickett Claim for 2s Gd the value of a duck said to have been killed by defendant. Mr Pitt for defendant. The summons having been taken out by Mrs Askew in her husband's-sabsence aud without his written authority, the Bench declined to hear the case. Thos. Renwick v. Henry Pearson. This was an action brought under the ' Resident Magistrate's Act, 1868,' a to enforce a judgment obtained in 1867. This case was partially heard, and then adjourned until Monday next, to enable defendant to produce his books. A public meeting in connection with the anniversary of the Wesleyan Methodist Missions, is advertised to take place in the Wesleyan Church, on Monday evening, at 7 o'clock. The Revs. W. J. Watkin, P. Calder, J. Davis, E. Thomas, J. Crump, and other gentlemen will address the meeting. We understand that the Westport Church Committee have approved of tho plaus submitted by Mr Lowe for the church proposed to be erected, and that tenders for its erection will be culled for as soon as the specifications are prepared. The plans are nov. on view at the shop of Mr Baird, stationer. — Westport Times. Mr Dobsoo, C.E., for twenty years one of Canterbury's public servants, has left that province for Melbourne, with the hope of finding a more favorable field for the exercise of his professiohal talents. The Christchurch papers complain of his being allowed to leave without the slightest recognition from th? public.
