The m&il for the United Kingdom, Continent of Europe, and America, via Suez and Marseiles, will close at Nelson^ .on' TKursde^ the. 1 1 th inst. at 7 a.m. We~jire fforixto hear-that J.-R. Patton,:. Esq^ :^Ueiit f .Magi3.^ate;on the South, We6t .Goidfielda, has been compelled by the failing state of his health to send in his resignation.

We would remind our readers that the presentation of Provincial Government prizes by the Hon. Col. Richmond, C.8., ■will take place in Victory Square, this evening, after the inspection parade, which < is called for six o'clock. By an advertisement which appears, in another column it will be seen that the dates for the district firing, aud the amounts to be competed for, have been appointed by the Officer commanding the district. We oajl the attention of our Volunteers to the following extract from the Government Gazette, by which it will be seen that the representatives are to be chosen according to the scores they make at the district firing, and that there will be no competitive firing as baa been the custom in previous years. 'Each province may send one representative to the Colonial Prize Firing for every 100, or fraction of 100 not being less than 50, enrolled Volunteers ; the highest scorers at the District Prize Firing shall be the representatives, aud, in additiou to the above, one representative for every thirty mea j who score 35 marks at the District Prize Firing may also be sent ; but noProviuce shall be. allowed to send more than twenty representatives.' As all the Carbines have been sent to Wellington, we are -informed that the Cadets will fire with medium rifles. The numerous friends of the late Mr White will be gratified to learn that the last mark of respect, that could be paid to . the memory of the deceased gentleman, has been shown by the fencing in, and erection of a headstone at his grave. The fence consists of a single twisted iron rail supported by eight stone pillars. The headstone bears the following inscription: — Sacred to the Memory of George White, Esq., for 15 years Clerk to the Provincial Council of Nelson, to whom he rendered valuable and faithful services throughout that time, and by whom this / stone is erected to his memory in token of their respect aud esteem. Died 12th December, 1867, aged 81 years. We understand that Messrs M'Keekan and Blackwood propose to run their fine fleet of steamers, between Melbourne aud New Zealand in such order that just about a week will elapse between the arrival of each boat at this port. The following are the names of the vessels and the route by which they will arrive here. Gothenburg via South, on the Bth of every month; Alambra via West Coast ; Tararua via South ; Rangitoto via West Coast. The Omeo will also run between the two colonies but will not call at Nelson.
