The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1869. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH'S VISIT TO NELSON.
It has at last been decided that H.R.H. the Duke of -Edinburgh is to visit Nelson, aud as will be seen from the following telegraphic correspondence, with a copy of which we have been favored by the Provinchil Secretary, His Royal Highness may be expected here early in April : — ' The Colonial Secretary to .his Hocor the Superintendent. Is it wished that the Duke of Edinburgh should visit Nelson ? It so, 'H.K.H. could probably do so early in April.' The followiog reply was telegraphed by the Superintendent : — 'It is wished that the Duke of Edinburgh should visit Nelson, and it is hoped that the Governor will accompany him.' This question having been decided, it only remains with us to determine how we are to entertain the Prince. We understand that a meeting of the Executive Council is to be held this afternoon, ! for the purpose of deciding what amount of money can be placed at the disposal of the Reception Committee, which we presume will consist of the same gentlemen who consented to act in that capacity in anticipation of the Eoyal visit last year, and whose names are as follows : — Sir David Monro, Mr Justice Richmond, Hon. Dr Ren wick, Messrs Sharp, H. Adama, J. Graham, and R. Burn. With a Committee composed of these geutle- ! men, we may rest assured that no pains will be spared in rendering the Duke's visit as pleasant as it can possibly be made, aud in preparing such a hearty welcome as shall convince him that, — although in the more wealthy commuui- \ ties that he has already visited he may have received a far more spbndid reception than that which we shall be in a position to offer him, — in none of the sister colonies does a truer spirit of loyalty, or a more sincere attachment to the Royal Family, of which he has proved himself so worthy a member, exist, than in our quiet little Province of Nelson. We ■■understand that an attempt is being made to have our annual race meeting at J the time of the royal visit, and we sincerely hope that our Jockey Club will find itself in a position to publish such a | programme as shall induce the best horses from the other provinces to put in an appearance, when we shall at all events be able to shdw the Prince .that we are not far behind the Australian colonies in the excellence of our sport, or in the quality " of the horses that we can bring to the post. | It will be observed that H.R.H. is f to be accompanied by the Governor, aud we , trust that all classes will unite in accord- : •in" to cur distinguished visitors, such a genuine welcomu as shall cause them to look upon the few days allotted to their visit to Nelson, as not the least pleasant part of the royal tour through New Zealand.
