Mr Stafford communicated intelligence of the escaped Maori prisoners, as well as that Colonel Haultain had arranged with 3pO friendly Maoris to proceed at once to the front in the Patea district. Mr Vogel's motion for the correspondence •which has passed between the Colonial Treasurer and the Comptroller, was agreed to, although Ministers asserted that by law it was not required. Mr Vogel moved for a statement shoeing how much of the £261), 000 authorised to be raised by loan for the following purposes, viz., telegraph extension, lighthouses, colonial defence, redemption of Taranaki debentures, and marine survey, had been expended up to date. Agreed to. Mr Vogel's motion for an alteration in the Libel Law was seconded by Mr Stafford, and consequently leave was granted to introduce the bill. A motioa relative to the calling out the Wanganui Militia was agreed to. An interesting debate on the Colonial Defence Force was opened by Mr Travers, and evidence was elicited that proved a clahting between the military and civil officers. The debate occupied 24 columns of Hansard. The Distillation Bill was read a second time. Ferries and Bridges .Bill was further considered in committee, and reported with amendments. Prevention of Frauds Bill was read a second time. Nelson, Cobden, Westport Kailway Bill was read a second time and ordered to stand referred to the Waste Lands Committee.
