TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE. Wellington, August 14, 2.3 p.m.

Intelligence arrived from Napier yesterday that our troops had • pursued the enemy, and overtaken them, posted in gorges difficult of access near the Rua-kai-ture River. They attacked them but could not carry the position.

Our forces drew off before sunset, several having been. wounded. The enemy did not follow, but broke up in haste after the action, and by daylight had retreated up the gorges. Two Volunteers, Captain Carr and Mr Canning, were killed. Our casualties were nine. The enemy must have lost heavily.
