The Vistula has overflowed its banks and done great damage to the adjacent country. England obtained the first place at the French Exhibition for chemistry and pharmacy. At the annual Oxford Commemoration, on June 28, the honorary degree of D.C.L. was conferred upon Mr George Peabody, the American philanthropist. Twopence a day has been added, from the Ist of April last, to the pay of all privates and non-commissioned officers throughout the army; an additional penny a day being given to all men who shall have re-engaged after a limited term of service. The sale of. original manuscripts of Sir Walter Scott, by Messrs Christie and Manson, realised 1,255 guineas. Mr Hope Scott Q.C. whose first wife was a granddaughter of Sir Walter, was amongst the principal bidders.
