" HOPE I DON'T INTRUDE."

To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir — Poor " Community" must have largely- developed nervous temperament — excitement bad for him. Must have been dreaming about ghosts, r for apply simple rule of subtraction to his letter, and take repetitions about ghost out of it, and there remains but the ghost of a letter. Advise him to study logic, and he wili learn that assertions are not always facts ; neither does it follow, because he was told by the Man in the Street a certain matter, that it is true. To illustrate this I will "spose a case," as the darkie said. Suppose "Community," who stands high in the eyes of his friends, was an officer, say in the Taranaki Volunteers, and stormed a pah, and fouud it empty, the birds flown, aud sends home splendid letter to friends in old country about brilliant affair with Maoris at said pah, in which "Community" distinguished himself. Friends proud of him, aud publish letter in Thunderer. In course of time copy of Thunderer finds its way to Taranaki, and people read account and are amused with details so carefully narrated of engagement which never took place. According to " Community" this would be sound reasouing, and statements all true because they bear appearance of truth about them. He speaks about common sense — hope all his other senses are right — should be sorry to frighten him out of them. Paul Pry's Ghost. July 13th, 1867.
