Yesterday evening a goodly number of the J electors of Suburban North met their ra presentative in the Provincial Council, E. Wastney, Esq.. at the Black Horse lun, Mr Pierson in the chair. One object of the meeting, as stated by Mr Wastney, was to express an opinion respecting the meagre apportionment of the public funds to the trunk road in that district. Some trouble was taken to get an approximate estimate of the average weekly traffic over the road, the resul t of which was the con elusion that no less than 126 vehicles (exclusive of Maori and pleasure-taking traffic, to say nothing •of persons on horseback) go to and return from Nelson, from the different farms and houses along the line of road. The following resolution was unanimously adopted : — " That this meeting respectfully request the Hoad Board to furnish its chairman with a detailed statement of the whole of the expenses incurred and to be incurred by them, to remedy the disasters caused by the late floods," and it was understood that Mr. Wastney would bring the matter before the Council. Another subject, fully discussed, was the probability and practicability of a road being made to the Province of Marlborough, by the Happy Valley route. This also it is the intention of Mr. Wastney to put before the Council. This meeting was made interesting by the general desire shown to give and obtain information, and a pleasant expression of feeling was prevalent throughout the evening. It has been stated pretty freely in town during the last day or two that a brisk competition has been going on lately at the Land Office for sections of land situate on the Keramea Eiver, and this is stated to have arisen from the accouuts which have reached Nelson of the highly auriferous nature of that district. We find, on enquiry, that this statement is not strictly true, inasmuch as the sections in question, twenty or thirty in number, (which have been sold ouly at the upset price), are situated in the projected township on the coast at the mouth of the Keramea. We alluded, a; short time since to the petition about to be presented to the Provincial Council by Mr, S. Owens, praying
for a recognition of bis services in connection with the apprehension of the Maungatapu murderers in June last. We then took occasion to call attention to the fact that although Constable Murphy had also been mainly. in strumental in. effecting their apprehension, he had never received any reward for that service. We are gratified to learn that his case is likely to be brought before the Council, with a view to the placing on the Estimates a sum of money which may serve as a recognition of his prompt and courageous conduct on that occasion. It may be interesting to some of our readers to know that the number of do°--tickets issued in this province during the past year was 640, showing an increase of 71 upon those issued in the pi'eceding year. We give the numbers issued iv the various districts : — City of Nelson 365 Suburban North ... 47 Waimea East ... 58 „ -South 40 .„ West 48 Motueka 15 Moutere 35 Kiwaka 32 Total 640
