THE RAILWAY SCHEME.

To THE EDITOK OP THE 'NELSON EVENING MAIL.' Sir — Can you inform me who is this Mr. Francis Stevens, who is playing fast and loose with the Nelson province about the railway to Cobden, &c. ? Who is he ? what is he ? and what money has he ? Does he give any guarantee ? Has he any surety for a milliou of money ? Millions of money are not, let me . assure you, procurable everywhere ; and any silly boy can look at the moon, but can he. get it? The draft agreement submitted 'by Mr. Stevens is all one-sided. The province is to be bound, but he is not ! Not he ! ! And what use would it be !! ! "He who soweth the wind, shall reap the whirlwind." Mr. Stevens' plan is ingenious (not ingenuous), he only wants two millions, etc.; and two hundred and ten thousand acres of ground, for what he (!) estimates at one milliou of money. And he is to be allowed nay, petitioned to go home and put this bargain in the market. Again I ask who is Mr. Stevens, to be trusted with 2,210,000 acres of the public estate? who is he ? what is he ? and where will he be, when he gets home ? Far be it from me, sir, to run down, or throw cold "water upon legitimate and honest undertakings, but when men without capital undertake to make railways to the moon, I think it is Moonshine.
