HERE WE AHE AGAIN!
To the Editor op the - Evening Mail. Mr. Editor—Beg pardon, but think great neglect somewhere. Friday last, went to see Fire Brigade practice again. No water in trap at Gentry's corner. Captain Knight sent foreman up near Campbell's mill to see cause; found it out, opened trap and turned it on, plenty water then ; pumped away at engine, good practice. Thought if fire happeued in town some r.ight, veiy awkward to have delay like that; say it without hesitation and say it boldJy—bad management somewhere. Your correspondent " Phiz," in Mail of 4th instant, says " brook whence the culvert derives the water has been diy for several days, and is alone to blame." Think "Phiz," just before writing that, had been very dry too, and took 100 much beer. Would like to ask -'Phiz" what made the brook wet enough to have plenty of waler on Friday Jast then? Was it the rain between the two practices ? Guess not. Recommend --Phiz" to go to Hong Kong. Bye-the-byc, heard about the cricket match on Thursday ; much disgusted with our men. Think Wakefield insulted. Should play for money next time ; make Kelson men try then or pay the piper. Hear the Wakefield girls have challenged the Albion Club ; betting, 3 to 1 on the girls : would like to play n^self ou that day. Went to Motueka per Woodpecker on Thursday. Father wouldn't go—recol-j lectedthe old potatoes they gave.him ; so sent me. Anniversary passed off well — pleasant day — plenty people—populous and commercial town< —splendid' wharf — good arrangements for fete—lots of fun — sumptuous dinner for old identities—good speeches on early difficulties, and sympathising inter-proviucial toast liy arising' M.P.C.; much amused. Home, at midnight. ■■ Yours, &c, '.' - Paul Pey, Jun.

By t he Panama mail, letters were received in Auckland from Mr. Sewell, late Attorney-General for this colony, in one of which lie says that he has commenced business in London as a law and general agent for the colonies. — Weekly News. The Charlston Argus of the 9th says : — A rather singular case, partaking of the horrible and the ridiculous occurred the other day. A poor fellow put on board one of the steamers at Fox's for conveyance to the Grey hospital died soon after the vessel started. The cabin was crowded, but the ladies cabin had no occupants, and the corpse was therefore placed there and decenily covered with blankets, &c. A certain stor-keeper, a passenger by the vessel, had been sacrificing pretty freely at the shrine of Bacchus, and did not come down to seek a resting place till late, when all the available space was tuken up. After some consideration, knowing probably that the ladies cabin was unoccupied, he went in there Hiid saw what he supposed to be a sleeping man with plenty of blankets. Consequently he at once turned in with the supposed sleeper, and remained all night in bed with the corpse. His horror on waking in the morning may be imagined, particularly, as owin<r to the libations he hud swallowed on the previous night his nerves were not iii the best possible order. The Marlborough Express, in n recent number, states, as Mr. Con Murphy's son Daniel, was driving a team of bullocks, conveying a thrashing machine across one of his father's paddocks, from some cause or other, at present unknown, the machine capsized, and the drum, weighing some seven cwt. fell upon the poor lad's \eg, tearing a large gash therein, and completely smashing the bone. Dr Home was immediately sent for, and, with DrMuller did what was necessary to prevent inflammation from setting in; but from inquiries made yesterday, it is probable that the leg will have to be amputated. The Express says, a case of strangulated Hernia having occurred to a person named Mark ham at Havelock, the '"wires" were employed for the purpose of obtaining the attendance of Dr. Williams from Blenheim, who promptly proceeded to Haveluck, and the operation was successfully performed by him, assisted by Dr. Sickler, the patient being under the iulluence of chloroform. The carelessness of a harvest hand has resulted in a serious fire in East Canterbury. The Lyttelton Times says that a man named Daniel White, was employed, by Messrs Wright and Murray, of Lincoln, as one of their hands for harvest work. A field of wheat nearly one hundred acres in extent,, had 1 een reaped and lay ready for binding and stacking. The labourer we have named lighted his pipe, and carelessly threw away the match among the corn. A strong north-west "wind was blowing at the time, which caught the flame and spread it over the field till the whole crop was consumed. The loss is estimated at not iar from one thousand - pounds. The Marlborough Express of the 2nd says:— We recently stated that a direct importation of cattle to this province was expected from Victoria. We are now informed.that two vessels loaded with cattle^ for Messrs. Bulleyne, have left Melbourne," and are expected at the Peninsula duringthe next \veek. Owing to, the high price of wheat in Britain (says, the Oamaru Times)* and the small figure at present ruling here, we understand tfyafc one of the firms in this place will ship, per. Star of Tasmania, a small quantity of oyr district produce, as a sample, with a view. .of testing its value iri the home market. • . The prospectus is published inDuuediri' of a new da'ly paper, the Otago Free Press,- with a capital of £7500, iv 3uOO shares of £2 10s each. The .company is 1 to be incorporated under the Limited Liar' bility Act.
