TO NATHANIEL EDWARDS, Esq., and the other Requisitionists. Gentlemen — I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your requisition, calling upon me to consent to be nominated as a Candidate for the office of Superintendent, on the intended resignation of Alfred Saunders, Esq. A requisition so numerously signed, by persons in so many parts of the province, and ot all shades of opinion, seems to point out so unmistakeably aud forcibly the feeliugs and wishes of the electors on this subject, as to leave me no choice as to the course I ought to pursue, under whatever doubts I may entertain of my own worthiness for the office ; — I shall therefore at once, as a duty, unhesitatingly accede to your request. From the length of time during which I have resided in Nelson, and the fact that I am personally well-known throughout the province, I feel relieved almost entirely from the necessity of entering into a statement of my views and opinions on all those subjects which most prominently interest its inhabitants, and on most of which my own opinions have frequently been recorded. Neither do I feel called upon, under the circumstances, to bid for 3-our votes on this occasion by making a number of specious promises. The only pledge I will give is a general one— that sliould your votes be the means of placing me in the important office you wish me to fill, whatever ability I may have shall be directed unceasingly and earnestly to the real progress and welfare of the province, and of ail classes ofthe community; together with a full determination to approach the consideration of every subject that may present itself, in a spirit of full enquiry, and thorough impartiality. From the opportunities I have had, during the discharge of my official and other various duties, for becoming thoroughly acquainted with the wants of the province, and the best means of administering to them, I am led to hope that my efforts on that behalf may not be unsuccessful. The reference made in your requisition to the " propositions connected with the interior development of the province," and fbr "improving its internal communication of all kinds," shall receive my best attention, should I be elected to the office of Superintendent. It may be sufficient to say here that whatever means shall be found to present the greatest facilities for the accomplishment of these purposes I Vill endeavor to forward to the fullest extent in my power, keeping in view the general welfare and necessities of the province, and the extent of its capabilities and resources. On this subject I shall have an opportunity ot making further explanations. On only one other question I shall at present offer a few remarks. There is evidently a set purpose in many quarters, and in the minds of many individuals to undervalue and gradually to undermine Provincial institutions, with a view of ultimately extinguishing them. . No one can claim on the part of our Provincial institutions a perfect freedom from any abuse, or improper use of their powers; but, on the other hand it cannot be denied that under the judicious ■working of these institutions, a large balance of real good has been affected, and much real advancement made. >
