THE SCOTTISH COVENANTERS' GATHERING WAR SONG. The tyrant's red banner still floats on the air, The arm of oppression is bloody and bare, The best of our country lie cold in their graves, By false Charles Stuart we're doom'd to be slaves. Too long have we suiFer'd, too long have we borne The rod of oppression and tyranny's scorn. Brave Balfour is gone to the muirlands to fight, And Hackston and Paton are there in their might; The blood of our martyr'd for stern A rengeance cries, The voice that commands us is heard from the skies. Too long have we suffer'd, too long have we borne The rod of oppression and tyranny's scorn. The bones of our worthies are torn from the tombs, The torch of the tyrant has kindled our homes, Our children are houseless, and hungry, and worn. Our wives and our aged to slaughter are torn. Too long have we suffer'd, too long have we borne The rod of oppression and tyranny's scorn. The flames, too, have gotten the Cov'nant we swore — The curse of the coward is ours evermore If forth not, in vengeance, we rise with the sword, And fight for our Covenant, our country, and Lord. Too long have we suiFer'd, too long have we borne The rod of oppression and tyranny's scorn. Nelson, October, 1566. W. Hogg.
