TARANAKI.
We are indebted to the purser of the Taranaki for files of northern papers, from which we extract the following : — Alpha Well. —Boring operations at this well are going on very slowly at present, in consequence ofthe hardness ofthe conglomerate throngh which the shaft is being driven. Above 80 feet of the same bed of conglomerate (though-the stuff frequently varies in hardness), have been gone through up to the present time. The shaft is now down about 110 feet. People's Petroleum Company. —This company have received boring machinery from Nelson, per Taranaki. To enable the company to proceed with its operations at once' the Government sent down surveyors on Tuesday last, to mark out the boundaries of their land. During the last two days men have been engaged in preparing the ground for boring, which is to be begun on Monday next. Petroleum Leases. —By a reference to our advertising columns, the terms will be seen on which the Government propose to let the reserve on the beach opposite the Native Reserve and Mission Station, for boring for petroleum. A Case for Consideration*. —An action wits brought in the Magistrate's Court on Thursday against a friendly native, Mohi Rahui, for £38 balance due on a horse he had bought. The horse was subsequently carried off by General Chute's force ingoing southwards, and defendant was not able to pay for it because his eight other horses were carried off at the same time, We hope the Government will enquire into this case. —Herald, May 19.
