QUEENSLAND.
Burke Town, at the mouth of the River Albert, in the Gulf of Carpentaria, is attracting some attention in Queensland. The arrival of a vessel at Bowen from Burke Town is noticed* by the Port Denison Times, which has the following notice of the settlement: — " The schooner Policemen came in from the Gulf of Sunday, the Bth inst., and brings flourishing accounts of the new country. There is a little fever and ague there, but not more than always occurs on the first peopling of a new settlement. We hear that there are about 170 people already in Burke Town. We have no doubt that before many years have elapsed it will become an important and flourishing port, and we hope that all our fellow-citizens who have thought to improve their fortunes by leaving Bowen for Carpentaria may succeed in their enterprise.
