The Electric Telegraph. — Telegraphic communication is suspended with the other provinces, probably on account of the line being broken down between here and Picton. Band op Hope.—- The usual fortnightly meeting of this society, was held on Wednesday evening last, at the Temperance Hall. It was opened by singing and prayer. The hall was densely crowded, principally by children of both sexes. Mr. Joshua Johns ably delivered a very instructive Lecture on "The Pilgrims Progress," which was illustrated by the aid of the Magic Lantern, exhibited by Messrs. J. Crisp and J. Hill. All present were highly delighted with the entertainment. At the close of the meeting 42 children signed the pledge. ' Spring Grove Baptist Chapel. — On Sunday next (to-morow), two sermons will be preached in the Baptist chapel of this place, that in the morning, by Mr. Larson, and that in the evening, by Mr. J. Davis. On the following Tuesday, a tea and public meeting will be held. The object of the services is to obtain a fund in favor of the expense of painting | and repairing the chapel. The Guichen Bay correspondence of the Border Watch says, " There is considerable excitement prevailing here, in consequence of the discovery of two diflerent species of shale, or kerosine rock in this neighborhood. From the appearance of one of (he samples it "would appear that at no great depth from the surface, are oil springs such as are obtained in America, Kerosine claims have been taken out already. There have been rumors through the week of a new gold-field in the neighborhood of Tokomairiro, but nothing definite has yet transpired. — Otago News Letter, April 21. ADVERTISEMENTS.
