At a quarter past 2 o'clock, the House adjourned to Tuesday. NELSON BOAED OF WORKS. Thursdat, April 26. Present: Messrs. T. Watts, Bentley, Wright, D. Burns, W. Rout, Carter, and R. Burn. Mr. Bentley in the chair. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The specification for Grove-street not being prepared the question was postponed. The specification for Toi-toi valley not being prepared the question was postponed. The report of Messrs Bentley and Carter, as to the work necessary to be done in Washington valley, was deferred until next meeting. The following report of Messrs. Bentley, Burn, Rout, and Wright, defining the duties of Secretary and Engineer, was unanimously adopted : — His services mustbe devoted entirely to the Board of Works, Nelson, and he must not engage in any other business. He must be competent to keep the accounts of the Board, and to act as Secretary. He must have a practical knowledge of works, and be able to carry out all public works required by the board. He must be able to take the levels for the draining of the entire city. He must collect all rates due by the Ist June, or summon for all arrears during the'month of June, so as to clear up all accounts for the annual meeting in July. He must be able to direct and control all labor employed by the Board. He will be required to attend at the office for two hours daily. He will be required to find sureties for £500. His salary will be £250 per annum. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary concerning the drainage for the gaol between town acres 486 and 477. Resolved that the same be replied to, stating that as soon as a new secretary to manage the works be appointed, the Board will be prepared to carry on the works mentioned in the letter. A letter was received from Messrs. Davis and others asking the Board to place three lamp posts, one at Snow's corner, Waimea-street, one at the Hospital corner, and one between Hospital and Hardy-street corner. It was agreed that two should be put up, one at Snow's, corner of Waimea-street, and one at the Hospital. It was resolved that a sub-committee be formed, consisting of Messrs. Carter, Rout, and Wright, to draw up resolutions to put before Mr. Henry Adams, for him to frame a bill for the Provincial Council, for levying special rates, and for draining the city, and also for regulatiug the cab stands in streets. A letter was received from Mr. Watkins, regarding the work in progress in Washington Valley ; Messrs. Bentley and Carter were deputed to report to the next meeting what they recommend as requisite to be done. An application from Mr Pratt, to have the water tables paved opposite his shop, in a similar manner to Mrs. Bird's, was agreed to. A letter was received from Messrs. Morrison and Sclanders, complaining of the nuisance caused by Mr. McConkey's engine. Ordered to be replied to, stating that the Board will give their consideration to the subject next meeting. An application from Mr. F. E. Mills, for an advance of £45 on his contract in Brook- street, and asking for further time for finishing the work, was agreed to, subject to the approval ofthe Brook-street committee. A letter was received from Mr. Drew, complaining of the closets behind the Criterion Hotel. The Inspector of Nuisances had served notice on Mr. Lewthwaite, who promised to abate the nuisance. An application from Mr. Akersten, asking permission to use the dobbin cart, on condition that he put it in thorough repair, was agreed to. Twelve applications for the ofiice of Secretary and Engineer to the Board were received, and after careful consideration of the abilities and testimonials ofthe various candidates, it was unanimously resolved that Mr. Younger be elected Secretary and Engineer to the Board. The applicants for the joint offices of Secretary and Engineer were, A. Dobson, R, H. Coe, Thomas King, W. C. Murfin, Thomas Younger, and for Secretary alone, G. W. Pauling, T. M. Bryant, E. Tucker, J. B. Sadd, W. Washbourn, G. Pile, J. Firth. ! The Secretary pro tern. was ordered to answer the different applications, and return the testimonials to the various candidates.
