This Day. [Before J. Poynter, Esq., 11. M.] J. A. Thornton of the Victoria Hotel, was ptfOtnplaiiied against by the police, for having

his house open on Good Friday morning. Defendaut admitted the offence and pleaded ignorance. His worship said he was inclined to treat the case leniently and would onlj fine him £5 and costs. Henry Pierson, butcher, was complained against by the police, for riding furiously through Bridge-street ou G-ood Friday morning. He admitted the offence, aud was fined £3 and costs. James Reilley (alias James Hampson,) was brought up on remand from Picton. Prisoner is charged with stealing the carcase of a sheep from Mr. Tasker's shop, Richmond. Case adjourned till Monday, for production of evidence. The late Fatal Accident. — We regret to state that the unfortunate man who was injured by the fall of earth, yesterday, at the Port, died this morning. An inquest was held on him this afternoon, the particulars of which we will give in our next issue. Fire. — There was an alarm of fire last evening, about seven o'clock. The fire-bell was heard, and numbers started out, in search of the locality. Fire had broken out in Mr. Gorrie's blacksmiths-shop, Bridge-street, aud had partially consumed the shingle roof; but was extinguished almost before the engine reached the spot. Withdrawal of Land by the Government. — The Superintendent of the Nelson Province has, by proclamation, withdrawn from the Collingwood Gold-fields, and from the operation of the Gold-fields' Acts, the following parcel of land, in the Province of Nelson, in the Colony of New Zealand, containing by admeasurement, three hundred and twelve acres, be the same more or less ; situated iu the district of Takaka, being section numbered 52, and part of sections numbered 58 and 59 on the plan of the said district ; bounded ou the north-eastward partly by other portions of the said sections 58 and 59, aud partly by the River Takaka ; on the south-eastward, partly by the River Takaka, and partly by section numbered 51 ou the said plan : on the south-westward partly by a public road, and partly by sections numbered 57 and 61 on the said plan ; and ou the north-westward, by section numbered 60 on the said plan.
