SUCCESSFUL RAILWAY BALL AT RANGIORA

DECORATIONS FEATURE OF CARNIVAL DANCE , n Particularly attractive decorations were only one of the many features which contributed to the outstanding success; of the Rangiora railway staff's annual ball in the Parish Hall last night. The walls were decorated with posters depicting various scenes "best reached by rail," and these alone, the work of the railways advertising department, were sufficient to convey the impression desired by the organisers. At the end of the hall, however, another novel centre of interest was an automatic railway signal, which intermittently flashed the familiar red and white lights. Ferns, New Zealand palms, and pot plants were arranged effectively, and the ceiling was festooned with streamers in the department's colours, red, white and green. Chinese lanterns completed the colourful picture. Special buses brought many visitors from Christchurch and Oxford, and it is estimated that nearly 400 people were present. The music was provided by Jack Maybury's Orchestra. Arrangements for the ball were made by a committee comprising Messrs W, G. Henderson, L. Evans, J. Mechen, J. L. Norton, T. O. Jenkins, A. E. Gill, W. J. Bennett, H. L. Hopkins, G. B. Williams, N. Clark, P. Ealam, L. J. Moran, I. G. Botherway, J. Cunningham, and T. Page. The guests of honour were Mr E. S.
