Life Without Art Unthinkable

At the annual exhibition of the Dumfries and Galloway Art Society, Mr Benno Schotz, R.S.A., sculptor, said:— "Life without Art is unthinkable. We can conceive a world, quite a nice world, without some refinements of our modern civilisation. We can live without armaments, without motor cars; we can even live without Treasury notes or gold. But how can we be expected to live without a soul ? Art is the visual expression of the human soul, an expression of its struggle to free itself from worldly shackles. It is much more than thai. It will ever remainiihe great mystery of our human activity."

Colonel T. E. Lawrence's cottage in Dorset has been handed over to the National Trust.
