Reunion of Returned Soldiers

ENJOYABLE SMOKE CONCERT HELD

An enjoyable smoke concert and reunion was held by the Rangiora R.S.A. in its club rooms on Saturday night, when more than 150 members and visitors were present, including many members of neighbouring branches and of local bodies.

The president, Mr J. W. Macleod, presided, and numerous toasts were honoured. During the evening many speakers mjide congratulatory reference to the appointment of Mr Macleod as district vice-president of the New Zealand Association for Canterbury and the West Coast. Community singing and musical items were also included in the programme.

The loyal toast and a silent toast in memory of absent comrades were honoured. Then Colonel J. A. Mackenzie proposed the toast of “The Visitors,” in the course of which lie made reference to the large number present, and extended a cordial welcome. Response was made by representatives from as far away as Australia, and from the Sumner, Oxford, Papanui, Amberley, Springston, and Kaiapoi branches, and of sub-committees of the Christchurch Association.

The toast of “Local Bodies” was proposed by Mr S. Newell, who paid a tribute to their service to the community. Response was made by tixe Mayor of Rangiora (Mr C. AV. Tyler), Messrs H. G. Philpott (Ashley County Council) and R. Peach (Kowai County Council). The health of “The Ladies” was proposed by the chairman and acknowledged by Colonel Mackenzie; and “The Artists” by the chairman and Mr S. M. Smith. .

Items were given by the Rangiora Brass Band and songs were sung by Messrs W. Duncan, G. Hirst, A. Little, A. E. Bladder, and AV. J. Roberts. Mr S. M. Smith was the accompanist.
